Using Photoshop for advanced purposes requires a good understanding of the layers and layers palette. The illustrated figure here shows the layers palette from the Layers palette (choose it from the Window menu) on the left and a corresponding image on the right. Understanding Layers
Photoshop uses layers to show where a selected image is positioned in a document. You can change a layer’s transparency or position it on an image or a new layer. This enables you to make a selection and then create other layers, such as a double-page spread, on which to work in multiple layers. If you’re familiar with other image-editing programs, you may be used to the idea of images that have separate layers of color and images that have separate layers for background, text, and so on.
When you create a new document in Photoshop, by default you create a single layer. The image is on top of that layer with all the other content underneath. You can separate this original layer from the image using the Layers palette, as shown in the right part of Figure 11-1.

You can also select an existing layer and drag it up to its own layer in the Layers palette, as shown in Figure 11-2. This action separates the original layer from the other layers in the document. I explain the Layers palette in more detail in Chapter 12.

Photoshop allows you to merge layers together by selecting multiple layers in an image and then using a merge command on the Layers palette. This action merges the layers into one layer and creates a new layer underneath the merged layer.
In Figure 11-3, I highlight some layers in an image and merge them with a command on the Layers palette.
The Merge command can be applied to multiple layers. For example, you can select a group of layers, such as the newspaper headlines, and merge all of them. You can drag up and down to apply the command to more than one layer.
