This book assumes you already have some basic knowledge of Photoshop. If you’re brand-new to the program, you may need to use a book with a bit more of an in-depth approach, such as The Missing Manual: Photoshopping for Photographers (O’Reilly).

The Most Common Photoshop Features

Few things work better in Photoshop than layers, which enable you to tinker with a single image or a group of images, and then bring them all back in one image. The layers (stacked sets of images — for example, one layer of a photo and one layer of a text frame) are stored in Photoshop as a series of bitmap files. It’s an amazing tool — don’t be intimidated by it. If you have a simple image, or just a couple of pictures, to work with, you can zoom straight to the Photoshop equivalent of a darkroom: the Layers palette, and wiggle those little arrows to change their order. Here’s what each of the buttons on the Layers palette does.

You can move, resize, add, subtract, duplicate, or merge images. The easiest way to use a layer is to select it and then select it again to move it to a new location. To add, move, or resize something, simply select it and drag its corner handles to the right or left to increase or decrease its size.

To duplicate layers, select them and press Ctrl+D (⌘-D). To move them, simply click and drag to the new location.

You can move a layer by selecting a layer and pressing the Delete key, and you can resize a layer by selecting it and then dragging the corner handles. The Duplicate Layer option makes a duplicate of a layer (the layer is represented by the same bitmap file as the original). (Alternatively, you can duplicate a file by right-clicking it and choosing Duplicate Layer.)

Using the Layers palette

By default, the Layers palette is at the bottom of your window, but you can move it to any of the other panes by following these steps:

1. Choose Window⇒Layers to make the Layers palette visible.

2. To position the Layers palette anywhere on the screen, click and drag the palette to the top of your Photoshop window or the side of your window.

The Layers palette (Figure 2-1) shows what’s selected in your currently open image,

The Big Smoke

The Big Smoke is the third studio album by English singer and songwriter Imogen Heap, released on 27 May 2006 by Parlophone/EMI. Musically, the album is a departure from her first two albums; it is described by Heap as “slightly bizarre” and is closer to dance or indie pop music. The album was a critical success, with Heap receiving many favourable comparisons to singer-songwriter PJ Harvey. “Finer Feelings” and “Keep Me in the Dark” were released as singles, and the song “Finer Feelings” became Heap’s first to make the UK Top 40.

Background and recording
The Big Smoke was recorded in Los Angeles, New York and London, and produced by Nick Launay. Heap said the album was written during her “good” period, and described it as “a bit looser, but still quite intense and quite focused.” Speaking to Spin about the album, Heap described it as “slightly bizarre”, adding: “It’s like my third and fourth albums, which had a bit more of a sinister backbeat.”

The artwork was designed by American artist Justin Jackley. The cover of the album features only Heap’s face and a mirror, with the back of the photograph having been painted black.

Themes and composition
The songs on The Big Smoke were inspired by Heap’s personal life, including her husband, Travis Stewart, who she married in July 2003. “I got more direct with the lyrics because I was writing about my life rather than just [about] songs,” Heap said in an interview with The Times. “Because people need to take my songs for what they are.” The closing track, “The Hanging Gardens”, concerns Stewart and Heap’s son, Wylie Stewart.

Musically, The Big Smoke is closer to indie and dance music than Heap’s first two albums. AllMusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine compared it to the music of PJ Harvey and Paul Simon. In its opening song, “Smokey Eyes”, Heap features a harp, a sample of “Eleanor Rigby” (from the Beatles’ Revolver album), and a melody drawn from the 1945 song “Pat-a-Cake”, written by Danny Kaye and Florence Reece. According to music writer Phil Monger, the song “We Don’t Know” is a “velvet-glove” arrangement,
