Over the past few years, the popularity of large amounts of “artistic” images on social media websites like Facebook and Flickr has soared. I’m seeing people using Photoshop to create images with backgrounds of picnics and flowers and merging photos together into collages with friends.
When I first started at a company where a client was paying $300 per image to have their logo transformed into different graphic design styles, I found it ridiculous and thought maybe I’d been misinformed about Photoshop. As it turned out, I was most likely right.
Today, I look at that as a pricing mistake. However, it’s possible that some companies did not recognize the difference between artistic creation and poorly executed business image branding.
Maybe they worked for a well-known company in a small town and didn’t know any better — after all, they didn’t have $300 to buy a new computer. Maybe that company has more work than it can handle, or maybe they just don’t know any better.
Whatever the reason, I was amazed at the number of poorly executed corporate branding images.
Your company’s logo is a simple and effective symbol. When you’re able to create a logo that will stand out in a crowd, you’re on the right track to success. However, when you use Photoshop to add flowers to your logo or make it entirely black and white, you’re not creating a memorable or unique logo but a corporate cheapie.
Here are a few things to avoid when you’re creating a logo:
• Creating an image in a square format in a graphics program is not going to work. You must create a rectangle or circle if you want to ensure that the design is scalable.
• Don’t crop images. Cropping images is a technique that will result in a poor outcome. Don’t try to remove an area of the image that looks like a business card (or use a bit of paper to simulate that area).
• Don’t make the design more complicated than it needs to be. For example, don’t use symbols in your graphic design, just a simple web address or company name.
• Don’t change the color of an image

How to Use Photoshop
Follow these steps to use Photoshop:

The Brush Tool
The Brush tool (B) in the Tools panel is the most versatile tool for photo manipulation. You can use it to paint onto images, create new images, clone objects from existing layers, adjust images in any way you like, and perform many other tasks.
