By default, AutoCAD is in 3D Drafting mode and requires a graphics tablet to input data. When you exit the 3D Drafting mode, AutoCAD locks to the computer mouse cursor. If you want to work with AutoCAD in 2D Drafting mode or to use a mouse, you need to exit 3D Drafting mode and switch to the appropriate 2D Drafting mode. You can also create an AutoCAD drawing, load a template (a drawing with predefined dimensions and text and plotting objects), or open an existing drawing.

To successfully use AutoCAD, you must have a computer, a graphics tablet, and a graphics display. Some of the features in AutoCAD work only with certain computer systems. Before you begin, make sure your system meets the minimum requirements for working with AutoCAD. For more information about system requirements, see the Minimum System Requirements table.

System Requirements

AutoCAD requires a computer with a processor speed of at least 486, 32 MB of RAM, a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and a graphics display.

You can use any available software application on your computer to create, modify, or view drawings. These include such popular applications as Microsoft Word, Quicken, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Photoshop, and WordPerfect. The only limitation is the memory (RAM) available on your computer. You should plan ahead so that you have enough memory to run AutoCAD and other applications at the same time.

Because AutoCAD can be rather processor intensive, it may slow down some other applications that you run on your computer.

Editing – AutoCAD (and other CAD software) can edit its own drawing information, and requires no proprietary or specialized CAD hardware. AutoCAD can work with other CAD software; for example, it is the default CAD program in AutoCAD LT, as well as being bundled with the Autodesk Anim8or, Encore, and A3D. AutoCAD 2012 and earlier versions of the DWG and DXF formats use the native file formats from the Windows operating system for exchange with other programs. AutoCAD 2010 supports PDF and XPS (Microsoft’s own proprietary file format), as well as ECW (Electronic Community Warehouse) and EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) formats. AutoCAD also supports the eDrawings standard from the Autodesk Exchange. Other file formats supported by AutoCAD are the DXF (AutoCAD Drawing Exchange Format), DWG (AutoCAD Drawing), BMP, PCX, and TGA (commonly used for desktop screensavers). AutoCAD also supports the OLE file format, which is the native file format of many Windows applications and Microsoft Office. AutoCAD can import files in these formats into the drawing file, and export drawings to them as well.

Outlining – AutoCAD can read and write a number of standard and proprietary outline file formats, such as PLT, DXF, DXD, DGN, DGN, DWG, DWG (later), IGES, GDS, PNDF, PNST, and others. AutoCAD can also read and write enhanced outline formats such as PLT2, PLT3, DXF, DXF, DXD, DGN, DGN, R12, R13, R14, DGN, KNA, NGN, PNDF, PNST, DGN, DXG, DWG, DXG, DWG, PLT, IGES, and others.

Technical and educational – AutoCAD includes technical support via two-way e-mail, e-mail/web conferencing, and other Web services. AutoCAD also includes templates, tutorials, and cheat sheets to guide the use of AutoCAD. AutoCAD Community Learning is a product and service that teaches AutoCAD and provides access to a community of online users.
