Heather and John Ward visit with a young friend
I remember being young and visiting my grandparents on a weekday morning, and John Ward showing me some of the gadgets he made in his workshop. One of the creations, was a kitty cat that was put in a box and had a big smile on his face. I thought he was cute, and it was too small to really play with. It didn’t even purr.
For Christmas, I asked my grandparents if I could have an “animals” box to keep all my toys in. So they bought me a metal cat box, and I discovered there was room for a few animals.
I was fascinated by the box. It had small compartments on each side, and a pull-out door. I found a space for each animal. I liked to play with my toys by giving each one a different name. For instance, the “dog” was a stuffed dog named “Ducky”. The “kitten” was a stuffed cat named “Cookie”.
The “hedgehog” was a rubber hedgehog and named “Shooty”. The “penguin” was a stuffed penguin named “Waldo”. The “ant” was an ant called “Anty”. And the “frog” was a stuffed frog named “Froggy”.
The animals were toys that I could play with. They were a symbol of my childhood, when I was 5 years old, and living in the “welfare state”.
When I was in my 50’s, I continued the tradition of playing with my animals. Now, with a computer and the internet, I have an opportunity to share some of those toys with my grandchildren, and even share some of my home-made toys with you.
Today, we are going to make “toy horses”. If you have children and grandchildren, they will love these horses. In fact, they will love them so much, that they will play with them for hours.
